Cape Town departure: 14 days
During The Keep Smiling Cape Tour we firstly jump on a bicycle for a tour through Cape Town and surroundings - this way you will get to know your way around and see most of the famous sights in one fell swoop. You can’t reach Robben Island by bicycle so we’ll take you onto the ferry to the prison museum to give you an insight into the rough history of South Africa. You also get the opportunity to converse with an ex-prisoner. In Oudtshoorn your journey takes you to the fantastical Cango Caves and Ostrich Show Farm. In the enchanted Tsitsikamma National Park we hike through the forest. In Port Elizabeth you are transferred to your 7-day experience of choice.
For the 7-day experience you might choose a volunteer project with animals, with people (from children to the elderly - sick or healthy) or within nature conservation. You can also choose to pick up a skill like learning to climb mountains or becoming a game ranger as a 7-day adventure experience. It’s all about getting involved and getting to know South Africa’s land and people. All volunteer projects and experiences are ideal for groups of friends and families - provided they are all interested in the same 7-day experience. If you opt for the self-drive Smiley Face Tours can arrange a volunteer project or experience for one individual and couples.

Fly to Cape Town, your guide meets you at Cape Town International Airport and transfers you to your first night accommodation. The volunteering or (adventure) experience can be either before or after the scheduled tour, depending on where you want to do the experience. Should you opt for the self-drive then you would pick up your rental vehicle in either Cape Town or Port Elizabeth. Please consult with Smiley Face Tours about your transfer to your (adventure) experience.
You haven’t lived if you haven’t seen the splendour of our Mother City: Cape Town. Abuzz with colour and alive with energy the city will caress you in its lovely embrace. Join us on the bicycle tour, a Smiley Face Tour favoured activity, from which you will see many famous landmarks. Follow us onto the ferry to the famous prison on Robben Island where the iconic Nelson Mandela spent 18 years of his life in a tiny jail cell. To lift your spirits after all the historically important lessons we take you to the pompous penguin colony at Boulders Beach and the Cape of Good Hope.
Your tour continues down the coast to Oudtshoorn, home to the world’s largest ostrich population with a number of specialised ostrich breeding farms. We visit one of the farms where you get to stand on top of ostrich eggs (they won’t break!) and watch the ostrich handlers race each other. The Cango Caves is another exciting stop, it is situated in a limestone ridge parallel to the Swartberg mountains and filled with the finest dripstone caverns.
Relax and sit back while you take in the verdant splendour of the Garden Route, passing towns like Sedgefield and Knysna, on our way to the Tsitsikamma National Park. Here you hike through the forest before moving on to Port Elizabeth, the Friendly City. Now it’s time to pack your bags for your 7-day volunteering project or (adventure) experience (if you haven’t experienced it already, before the scheduled tour)!
