Day 1: HIGHLIGHTS OF CAGLIARI
Today, we’ll become acquainted with this fine city on a guided tour starting at 14.00 from your hotel.Cagliari has an enviable setting overlooking the beautiful Bay of Angels and its historic heart, the CASTELLO which is cradled by ancient ramparts that enclose some beautiful architectural gems and historical treasures.Our discovery tour features a visit to the NATIONAL ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM,the SANTA MARIA CATHEDRAL,where to admire the Pisan Romanesque facade and the BASTIONE SAINT REMY, a glorious spot for amazing views. Day 2: ANCIENT NORA & SARDINIAN WINERY
This morning we drive south-west out of the city of Cagliari over bridges and viaducts crossing salt pans that have been in use since the Romans arrived to the sunken Phoenician city of NORA, one of Sardinia’s most important archaeological site.Following this, drive to the village of SERDIANA for a visit to a family-run WINERY for a tasting of some Sardinian wines such as Vermentino and Cannonau.Return to Cagliari for an included lunch followed by the afternoon at leisure,maybe visiting the vibrant marina quarter, a tangle of tiny streets bursting with tantalizing shops, restaurants and bars.Overnight in CAGLIARI.Walking: Moderate
Day 3: SAN BENEDETTO MARKET, OLIVE FARM, UNESCO SU NURAXI
Our day starts with a visit to the popular SAN BENEDETTO MARKET where you see how the locals shop, what they buy, what is fresh, and what is caught in this part of the Mediterranean sea.Then we drive to the nearby community of DOLIANOVA to visit a family owned OLIVE OIL FARM, to learn about the history of olive oil production in Sardinia and sampling their local products.Continue to BARUMINI for a tour of the Bronze Age site at SU NURAXI, ancient megalithic constructions developed during the Nuragic age (1900-730 B.C.), included by UNESCO as World Heritage Site.The Nuraghic people built many prehistoric stone villages in Sardinia from about 1800 BC but left no written records. Su Nuraxi, is described as the finest and most complete example of this remarkable form of prehistoric architecture.We spend the next two nights in a beautiful 18th century country house “HOTEL LUCREZIA” located in the heart of the backroad village of RIOLA SARDO, near Oristano.An al fresco dinner is included this evening.Overnight in RIOLA SARDO.Walking: Moderate
DAY 4: EXCAVATIONS OF THARROS, CHARMING BOSA & MUSEUM-VILLAGE OF TINNURA
This morning we drive to the near archaeological excavations of THARROS, a city founded by the Phoenicians around the end of the 8th century BC, on a split of land called Capo San Marco and soon became a flourishing center of commerce. Continue to the delightful pastel colored houses town of BOSA located on a green valley at the foot of a mountainous area dominated by the CASTELLO DEI MALASPINA, on the right bank of the Temo river, the only navigable one in Sardinia. This fascinating town is famous for its artisan tradition of gold-filigree jewelry and lace-making.Upon arrival we visit a local wine shop for a tasting of their sweet wine MALVASIA,Sardinia’s highest-quality,then have free time in the town for lunch and to explore on your own.We complete the day visit with a photo stop in the mural town of TINNURA. Here, the streets are evocative with paved squares housing statues of Sardinian artists and colourful murals painted on houses, depicting the moments of traditional life.A light Italian style dinner called “apericena” is included this evening while learning how to prepare a Sardinian dish with our chef.Overnight in RIOLA SARDO.Walking: Moderate
DAY 5: BACKROAD SARDINIA:MAMOIADA, SACCARGIA & NURAGHE SANTU ANTINE
Today’s travelling takes you to the heart of Sardinia where there is a place of culture that tells us about thousands of years of history, traditions and centuries of festivities and rituals, shared by various civilizations in the Mediterranean.In the remote village of MAMOIADA we experience the Museum of the Mediterranean masks, famous throughout the world for its traditional carnival masks followed by a demonstration of how the Sardinian Carasau bread is made.Continue to examining the impressive NURAGHE SANTU ANTINE,the greatest and best preserved in the Valley of the Nuraghi, built between the 16th and the 9th century BCE, famous for its 17-metre high tower protected by three bastions.On the way to Alghero, we stop at the Church of the Holy Trinity of SACCARGIA, the major Medieval church in the island.Spend the next two nights in the picturesque medieval seaside town of ALGHERO at the central “CARLOS V HOTEL” or similar.Tonight, you’ll eat like a local with a pizza by meter dinner in a local restaurant.Overnight in ALGHERO.Walking: Moderate
DAY 6: NEPTUNE’S CAVE, CATALAN ALGHERO & HOME-HOSTED LUNCH NEAR ALGHERO
In the morning, we’ll depart for an exciting adventure of the mystical CAVE OF NEPTUNE by private boat from the port of Alghero (weather permitting), bathed in shimmering colors and bristling with stalactites and stalagmites contorted into fantastical shapes.Please note that in case of unfavorable weather or strong wind, we are obliged to cancel the boat trip and driving instead to the limestone headland of CAPO CACCIA where a steep series of 654 steps leads down to the cave for you to visit. Following the Catalan-Aragonese invasion of Sardinia, the medieval fortified seaside town of ALGHERO underwent total Hispanicization and became known as “little Barcelona”.The lively piazza is fitted with shops and restaurants.Our guided tour takes you through labyrinthine alleys of remarkably preserved old Alghero, defended by robust walls and four bastions dedicated to famous explorers.Continue to the hills of Alghero where meet a Sardinian family in their farmhouse for a delicious home-hosted lunch and hands-on-making local cheese.Overnight in ALGHERO. DAY 7: ENCHANTING BONIFACIO & CORSICA ISLAND
Contrast the scenery of the two islands as you transfer from Sardinia to CORSICA, admiring the charming landscape of the north-western coast where picturesque granite formations appear out of deep cork oak woods and pastures.Depart to SANTA TERESA DI GALLURA for embarking on the ferry to CORSICA (approx 1 hr journey).The approach to Bonifacio by water is spectacular.Upon arrival, we drive to Bonifacio Marina for sightseeing and lunch on your own. Following this, a local guide will show the highlights of the well-preserved old town of BONIFACIO.We’ll be staying for the night at the family owned “HOTEL SANTA TERESA” or similar.Dinner is on your own this evening.Overnight in BONIFACIO. DAY 8: MEDIEVAL SARTENE,CORSICAN PROPRIANO & SCENIC DRIVE TO AJACCIO
Corsica boasts a long, eventful and troubled history.Rarely has it ruled itself, often has it been fought over.In the morning, drive to the fascinating medieval town of SARTENE, located up the hill in the valley of the Rizzanese river.Lunch is included today in the charming coastal town of PROPRIANO.Continue to AJACCIO, your base for the next two nights at the 5stars “HOTEL LES MOUETTES” or similar, located on Corsica’s famous route des Iles Sanguinaires.Overnight in AJACCIO. DAY 9: NAPOLEON & BOAT TRIP TO THE ILES SANGUINAIRES
After breakfast, we embark on a walking guided tour of historical AJACCIO, the largest city in Corsica and famous because Napoleon Bonaparte was born here on August 15, 1769. Our tour features a visit to the MAISON BONAPARTE, the charming historical center with its color-washed, terracotta-tiled houses and narrow backstreets and the Venetian Renaissance-style Cathedral, where Napoleon and his siblings were baptized.Rest of the day is at leisure or maybe enjoy a panoramic route des Sanguinares for a relaxing boat trip around those stunning islands(weather permitting).Dinner is included this evening in a local bistro.Overnight in AJACCIO. DAY 10: ANCIENT CAPITAL OF CORTE & RESTONICA VALLEY
Today, we explore the medieval town of CORTE, whose fortunate geographic location meant that on several occasions potential conquerors, including the Romans, had to stop short of this region. From its Citadel, which is the home of the musee de la corse,one of the leading centers of Corsican culture, there are commanding views of the territory.Continue to the heart of the RESTONICA VALLEY for an included lunch in a Corsican restaurant.Drive to BASTIA for your last two nights at the charming “HOTEL DES GOURVERNEURS” or similar located in the heart of the citadel.This evening is at leisure, with dinner tonight on our own.Overnight in BASTIA. DAY 11: DISCOVER THE MAGIC OF BASTIA
BASTIA has a charm of its own, with its Citadel and the historic center, its narrow alleys.With its colorful houses overlooking the sea, Bastia is the second largest city in Corsica and is considered its economical capital.Your day begins with a short walking tour to orientate with the colorful citadel and the seaside part of the town, joining the locals in their ritual coffee in Place de Nicolas or a pastis at the vieux Port.Afterwards,explore further at your own pace. In the evening we’ll celebrate you with an “AU REVOIR DINNER” sharing travel memories and toasting new friends. Sante’! Overnight in BASTIA. Walking: Moderate
