NZD 45 per person Xena film tour (optional half day tour from midday to dusk): See the spectacular West Coast sunset with picnic dinner on the beach, swimming, beach activities, and heaps of fun! We guarantee the spectacular scenery changes in every hour throughout this tour… You’re fan or not you’ll be captivated by this remote coastline, hills and rain-forests. Pack your dinner and water, there is no shops in the wild! Bring your swimming togs/towel/sunblock/sunglasses…

1. Wainamu Dunes and forest where Xena and the Amazones came out of the forest and ran up-to the sand dunes to fight the Besurker and so many other filming here. Wainamu area with lake and dunes is one of the most devine place to film this spectacular and ever lasting tv-serie.

Visit Lake Wainamu over the black sanded “desert”, – a popular swimming alternative to the wild west coast beaches. An easy and beautiful walk from the car park to the lake with the winding Waiti Stream and thick native bush around. Very special…

2. Bethell’s Beach  has been one of the most used and most beautiful film locations of Xena Warrior Princess.

Participating in the miles of open space deafened by the roar of the mighty waves you can really believe you are the only person on earth. The sand begins well back from the surf and there is a shallow lagoon before the river reaches the sea. See the sea-caves at low tide at Bethells beach! Get into them and discover where they lead us… Fun!!!  [:)]

3.  Muriwai becah and Woodhill Forest some shootings took place of Adventure in the Sin Trade, especially some Alti versus Gabby action.

One of the greatest attractions at Muriwai Beach is the Gannet Colony. It’s hugely entertaining. Two viewing platforms provide up in close views at the beautiful wild birds  – they are almost within reach! The views from the colony are very impressive. Muriwai Beach extends 60 kilometres to the north – a line of black sand between the thundering surf and the sand hills. Far below, enthusiastic surfers look like seals on the large ocean swells.

4.  Maori Bay is another exclusive film location to be visited. Arriving at Maori Beach you will be charmed by its mystic presence. I got immediately the flash of the scene before me of the episode Looking Death the Eye, where Xena recovers from the launch and goes searching for her daughter and fools the Gods.

Standing on the beach and looking up to the steep natural stone wall, you feel so tiny against this natural wall formation. The cave, which you also can see behind Xena on the screengrabs can be visited as well. The cave has a very nice window that gives a nice view onto the sea

Visit Goat Island New Zealand’s first marine reserve! It is the best place to see marine life in abundance, just off the beach. Snorkel, swim or watch the fish from the rocky shore or from the Glass Bottom Boat. Having been protected since 1975, this marine reserve has big snapper, blue maomao and many other species of fish close to shore. Snorkel gear can be hired locally. NZD 35 per person

Optional Activities:

NZD 20 per person Mangawhai scenic walk. Mangawhai Heads beach. This is an excellent beach and cliff-top walkway (1.5 – 2 hours) through farmland and bush areas. The high quality grading of the track has made it probably the most stunning walk in the area!. You will enjoy outstanding views of Bream Head, the hen and Chicken Islands, and all the way down to the Hauraki Gulf including the Mokohinau Islands and Great/Little Barrier. Gaps in the tree line reveal yet more views that are stunning. It pays to keep looking around as you progress along the track. One of the more interesting features is a natural formation called ‘the giant staircase’, a natural amphitheatre just below the track carved from the hillside. The views are tremendous, the exercise is healthy, and the shell collecting on the way back to the carpark is a bonus!

A pizza and a beer included.
