(PS02) San Blas by air

For those who want to avoid a long road trip or who’d rather visit those more remote islands without road access, we offer you the option of visiting San Blas by air.

The Guna people’s major income is from the coconut harvest as well as fruits and vegetables from the rain-forest. In the morning, you can watch the men leave in their dugout canoes to begin their day of work while women get infants off to school and brush the floors. Many then begin sewing their ‘molas’  (traditional tunic-weavings) or making beaded wrist bracelets which contribute an important additional family income by selling to tourists.

Your accommodation on the island is in modest-yet-comfortable rooms with private bathroom. Our 3 day/2 night package will include soaking up sun on the white-sand beaches, snorkeling, swimming, wild-life spotting, learning about the Guna culture and eating delicious local cuisine.

Flights might be delayed on the way back to Panama City so we recommend you don’t do this package if you are leaving Panama the same day, even you have a late flight back home.

What to bring: Water shoes, sandals, beach towel, sunscreen, insect-repellent, flashlight, personal medications, snorkeling gear and lantern/torch.

Shorts and T-Shirts will do fine almost anywhere on the island.

Location

Day 1

Our driver will pick you up from your hotel early in the morning in Panama city and take you to the domestic airport for your flight to San Blas. The flight will take about 40 minutes and you will get the opportunity to see hundreds of small sandy islands from the air. Upon landing, we will take a short boat trip to the island where your accommodation is.

Once you are there, you can choose to stay to enjoy the beauty of the island or start to explore other islands to check out the Guna communities learning about their cultures, customs and people. There is an option to visit other islands as well taking a tour, which is included in the package. Lunch and dinner will be served in the common area so you will have the opportunity to meet worldwide visitors to share your travel experiences.

Day 2

Waking up in the morning to the sound of gentle waves is a relaxing way to start a new day. After taking your breakfast, you can choose to relax and sunbathe on the beach or swing in a hammock enjoying the breeze. Otherwise go snorkeling right in front the island and if you wish to do a boat trip, just jump in the boat in the announced hour to check out other islands. Remember to carry a couple of dollars for the permission of visiting those islands or Guna communities where native hand-made ‘molas’ or other art and crafts can be purchased.

Dinner will be served early as part of native Guna’s custom and looking at the sparkling stars in a hammock is a totally relaxing pastime after your meal.

Day 3

After breakfast, you’ll take the short boat ride to the airport for your flight back to Panama City. You will get back to the city in the morning and so will have a whole day to explore the city or continue your plans to visit other parts of the Panama.
